Obvs I’m Ready for Great British Bake Off

The last few weeks I have been waking up to new horrible things every morning on the news. Since this shitshow of diminishing human rights and authoritarian regime flouting of the rule of law is clearly ramping up, standing against it in any way is a marathon. A disheartening, depressing, infuriating marathon.

Losing heart and giving in to apathy and depression while the leader tries to burn everything our country was built weakens resistance, so self-care and taking breaks is important. Vitally important.

Last weekend I took time to slow down and try my hand at fancy baking. Cooking and baking from scratch is a sporadic hobby for me: when I feel like it, it’s fun and satisfying. When I don’t, is a pain in the ass I can’t bother with. Yes, I know that’s bad grammar: it’s Monday morning, so that’s what I have available.

It turns out pavlova with homemade lemon curd topping isn’t difficult, just time consuming. Turned out terrible for us (so much sugar) all and SO delicious.

I’m inordinately proud of myself for doing something new that I thought was way beyond my skills while watching GBBO. Definitely adding this to my dessert repertoire. Definitely not ever doing bake off in real life.

If you celebrated Easter yesterday, I hope it was lovely and that spending time with family (however that’s defined for you) gave you a rest and a chance to prioritize what’s important.
